Muscle Is a Longevity Tool: Why Strength Matters More in Midlife
When we think about healthy aging, we often focus on things like weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, or heart health. But there’s another important piece of the longevity conversation that doesn’t always get enough attention: muscle.
Beginning in adulthood, muscle mass and strength gradually change with age. Over time, those changes can affect much more than how strong you feel. Maintaining muscle and strength can support mobility, physical function, metabolic health, and the ability to remain active and independent as you get older.
What Happens to Muscle as We Age?
Muscle mass and strength naturally change throughout adulthood. Muscle mass and strength generally peak in early adulthood, followed by a gradual decline that can become more noticeable later in life. This age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function is known as sarcopenia.
But muscle mass is only part of the picture. Strength and physical function matter too. Changes in muscle quality and strength can affect everyday activities such as climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, carrying groceries, maintaining balance, and staying physically independent.
Midlife is an important time to start paying attention to muscle health rather than waiting until significant muscle loss has already occurred. The good news is that these changes are not entirely outside of our control. Regular physical activity, particularly resistance training, can help maintain and improve muscle strength as we age.
Why Muscle Matters for Healthy Aging
Muscle does much more than help us move or change the way our bodies look. It plays an important role in maintaining physical function, supporting metabolic health, and helping us stay active and independent as we age.
Research has consistently linked greater muscle strength with better health outcomes in older adults. Lower muscle strength has been associated with a higher risk of functional limitations, falls, and mortality. This does not mean that muscle alone determines how long we live, but it does suggest that maintaining strength is an important part of healthy aging.
This is why the conversation around longevity should not focus only on extending lifespan. Maintaining the strength and physical capacity to continue doing the things you enjoy is an important part of improving healthspan, the years of life spent in good health and with greater independence.
Building and Maintaining Muscle in Midlife
The encouraging part is that muscle remains responsive to the right stimulus as we age. Resistance training is one of the most effective strategies for maintaining and improving muscle mass and strength, and benefits can occur even when strength training begins later in life.
Nutrition matters too. Adequate protein provides the amino acids needed for muscle protein synthesis and can help support the adaptations that occur with resistance training. However, more protein is not necessarily better for everyone, and individual needs can vary based on age, activity level, health conditions, and overall dietary intake. Research also suggests that simply adding protein supplements without considering resistance exercise and overall protein needs may provide limited additional benefit for otherwise healthy older adults.
Rather than focusing on a single supplement or number, think of muscle health as the result of several habits working together: regular resistance training, adequate nutrition and protein, physical activity, and sufficient recovery.
Midlife, Menopause, and Muscle Health
For women, midlife can bring additional changes that may affect muscle health. The menopausal transition is accompanied by significant hormonal changes, and research suggests that lean or muscle mass may decline across this period. However, the relationship between menopause itself and muscle loss is complex, and factors such as aging, physical activity, nutrition, and overall health also play important roles.
This makes midlife an important opportunity to become more intentional about preserving strength and muscle. Resistance training has been shown to improve strength in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and recent research demonstrates that postmenopausal women can still make meaningful improvements in muscle strength and muscle volume with consistent training.
Rather than viewing these changes as inevitable, focusing on muscle health during midlife can be one practical way to support strength, function, and healthy aging for the years ahead.
Practical Ways to Support Muscle Health
Supporting muscle health does not require an extreme exercise routine or a complicated nutrition plan. Consistency matters more than perfection.
Resistance training should be a regular part of the picture. Current physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups at least two days per week. This can include weights, resistance bands, machines, or body-weight exercises.
Adequate protein intake is also important for maintaining muscle tissue. Protein needs can vary based on factors such as age, activity level, overall health, and dietary intake, and research continues to evaluate whether some older adults may benefit from protein intake above the current recommended dietary allowance.
Just as important is staying physically active throughout the day. Walking, recreational activities, aerobic exercise, and balance work complement resistance training and contribute to overall physical function and healthy aging.
The goal is not necessarily to build large amounts of muscle. It is to preserve the strength and physical capacity that help you continue doing the things that matter to you as you age.
The Bigger Picture: Muscle as a Longevity Tool
Healthy aging is about more than adding years to life. It is also about maintaining the strength, mobility, and physical function that allow us to remain active and independent throughout those years.
Muscle health is one part of that bigger picture. Research shows that resistance training can improve strength and physical function in older adults, including abilities that translate into everyday life, such as walking, climbing stairs, and getting up from a chair.
You do not have to wait until older age to start thinking about muscle health. Midlife offers an opportunity to build habits that may help preserve strength and function for the decades ahead.
Rather than thinking of muscle only in terms of appearance, consider it an investment in how you want to move, function, and live as you age.
